The Nebraska Law Enforcement memorial was dedicated in 2009, to memorialize and remember law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Nebraska. Currently, there are 144 names engraved on the main memorial wall. The feature was expanded to include memorial pavers, honoring 90 Nebraska officers that have passed, while in community service.
The NE Law Enforcement Memorial is located, on State Fair Blvd, in Grand Island, NE. It is a City of Grand Island Park and is open to the public 24/7.
On 23 January 2016, Omaha Police Department Canine Officer Kobus was killed in the line of duty; shot while subduing an armed barricaded suspect, saving the lives of his fellow human officers. Law enforcement service animals, K9 and Mounted Horse Patrol are an integrally valued part of our our law enforcement family, as well as cherished members of their human partner’s family, who they live with and are cared for by 24/7. Law Enforcement service animals effect the lives of the community they serve on a daily basis and unfortunately are sometimes called upon to sacrifice their own lives, to save their fellow human officer’s from death or serious harm. In 2016 the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Nebraska Chapter II approached the committee with the idea to add the feature and we agreed that it should be a priority.
We have received estimates indicating the total cost for this project will be $25,000 to $30,000. That is our target for this particular campaign. Any funds raised in excess of the cost for construction, will be saved and used for future maintenance and repairs to the memorial park.
The service animal feature will be on the same property as the main memorial, but positioned away from the main wall slightly with a sidewalk and separate platform area. The new memorial will be a black granite stone feature with design aspects similar to the main memorial wall.
